We have been the latest city to participate in helping to reduce the waste that plastic straws have been causing to our Mother Earth, specifically to our beautiful ocean. Last Tuesday, the Santa Barbara City Council unanimously passed a bill that prohibits bars, restaurants, and other food service businesses from handing out plastic straws to their customers. Stirrers and utensils that are made out of plastic can still be legally provided, but only if customers request them. A $1,000 Fine and Jail Time awaits the violators.

Plastic straws have been a part of our day to day lives and replacing it could not have been any easier with these eco-friendly alternatives:

5. Steel Straws

Bring out your own steel straw everytime you eat. You can carry it out on your bag or in your lunchbox. Known for its durability, handy and easy to clean and can be used for a long period of time.

4.Paper Straws

You have been very familiar with these cute and artistically designed paper straws at every children's party. These straws can even go with your mood for the day, thru its colors, or the shapes and designs that are in it. Aside from it being a single-use alternative, they are fully compostable.

3.Bamboo Straw

This eco-friendly alternative has been the very famous amongst all. Such Bamboo straws are made without any dyes or chemicals. It is reusable, widely available in the market and is lightweight. They can also be easily washed.

2. Water Bottle or Reusable Cup With Straw

Having your own water bottle or reusable cup with straw anywhere you go is also one of the best options. Having these type of water bottle or reusable cup means that you don't need to worry about where to buy these other types of eco alternative straws or as to when to replace them.

1. No straw at ALL!

This is simply the very best alternative that you can have. Most of the time, straws are actually unnecessary and you can definitely live without it. Drinks that have lids designed with a need for a straw can sometimes be a lot easier to drink up. Plus, brands can also help by developing ones that would not be needing one.
